A REGENCY MAHOGANY METAMORPHIC LIBRARY ARMCHAIR
CIRCA 1820, AFTER THE DESIGN BY MORGAN AND SANDERS
This metamorphic armchair corresponds to a design first published in Rudolph Ackermann's Repository of Arts, July 1811 and captioned 'This ingenious piece of furniture is manufactured at Messrs. Morgan and Sanders's, Catherine-St. Strand' (P. Agius, Ackermann's Regency Furniture & Interiors, Marlborough, 1984, p. 60, pl. 29). The chair was 'considered the best and handsomest article ever yet invented, where two complete pieces of furniture are combined in one - an elegant and truly comfortable armchair and a set of library steps'.

Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
Good condition overall, structurally stable and ready to use. There are inevitable minor scratches, marks, knocks, chips, losses, wear, abrasions, shrinkage cracks and areas of discolouration overall, consistent with age and use. One side is very sunbleached, probably as a result of being in a window for a lengthy period of time. The caning is damaged and saggy and would require stabilisation to prevent further damage prior to use. There is a replaced strip of timber to the rise of the third stair tread, above the hinge. The back right leg of the chair/front left leg of the steps has been replaced. There is a strip of later replaced timber to the underside of the lowest tread and there is a replacement to the left side rail of the bottom tread. The leather replaced and in fairly good condition. The catch in good order.
