With a pair of Gothic arcaded doors inset with simulated organ pipes between reeded uprights, above a door painted with a ribbon inscribed 'S**t by GOW & SHEPHERD Edinburgh' and with six labelled pulls, the base section with a hinged flap to the side, on square tapering legs, the interior mechanism now removed, the doors adapted, the interior with an inscribed label listing the various tunes played by each barrel including 'Golden hair'd Laddie', 'Rule Britannia', 'God Save the King' and 'Lord Wellington'

Lot Essay

Neil Gow (1763-1831) was a composer, performer and musical arranger, who wrote about 200 compositions during his lifetime. In 1796 he established a music-selling business with William Shepherd at 41 North Bridge, Edinburgh, which continued until Shepherd's death in 1813.
