Comme le raconte l'histoire [Lautrec], Guibert et leurs amis sont partis au début du mois d'août [1895], de bonne humeur, avec une caisse de vin et de champagne, à bord d'un cargo appelé le Chili, pour une croisière le long de la côte, du Havre à Lisbonne...
À bord du navire, ils aperçoivent une ravissante jeune femme voyageant avec sa fille et leur caniche, en route, dit-on, pour rejoindre son mari, fonctionnaire colonial, à Dakar. Henri fut enchanté par sa beauté, et une... merveilleuse affiche lithographique... subsiste pour témoigner de son engouement. Selon Joyant, Henri était tellement amoureux d'elle que Guibert eut du mal à lui faire quitter le navire à Lisbonne. Il voulait la suivre jusqu'à Dakar.

...Joyant dira plus tard que la lithographie d'Henri est "une chose exquise, par son ton, par son élégance, par son humeur d'indolence, par la manière dont elle traduit le plaisir d'être en vie, les yeux oisifs, par un beau jour...". As the story is told [Lautrec], Guibert and their friends set off in early August [1895] in high spirits with a case of wine and champagne, on a cargo liner called the Chili, to cruise down the coast from Le Havre to Lisbon...

Aboard the ship, they saw a lovely young woman travelling with her daughter and their poodle, on their way, it was said, to join her husband, a colonial civil servant in Dakar. Henri was enchanted by her beauty, and a...marvellous lithographic poster...survives to document his infatuation. According to Joyant, Henri was so taken with her that Guibert had a hard time getting him to leave the ship at Lisbon. He wanted to follow her to Dakar.
