Le Bon Samaritain

Le Bon Samaritain... est une grande gravure sur pierre : un mélange incongru de palmiers, de sorbiers et de chênes accolés, sans souci des saisons et des climats, peuplé de singes et de hiboux, couvert de vieilles souches aussi difformes que les racines de la mandragore ; puis une forêt magique, coupée au centre près d'une clairière d'où l'on aperçoit au loin un ruisseau, derrière un chameau et le groupe des Samaritains ; puis une ville elfique apparaissant à l'horizon d'un ciel exotique parsemé d'oiseaux et couvert de masses de nuages cotonneux. On pourrait dire que c'est le dessin d'un Dürer incertain, primitif, au cerveau imprégné d'opium".
Cet extrait apparaît dans le roman décadent Á rebours, 1884, de J. K. Huysman, dans le cadre d'une séquence narrative décrivant la collection d'art éclectique du personnage central, un esthète reclus, Jean des Esseintes. L'inclusion par Huysman du chef-d'œuvre lithographique de Rodolphe Bresdin, aux côtés d'œuvres d'Odilon Redon et de Gustave Moreau, reflète l'importance que ses contemporains accordaient à Bresdin. Redon, à qui Bresdin a enseigné l'art de la gravure et de la lithographie, a déclaré : "Son pouvoir résidait uniquement dans l'imagination. Il ne concevait jamais rien à l'avance. Il improvisait avec joie, complétant avec ténacité les enchevêtrements de la végétation à peine perceptible des forêts qu'il rêvait. . . " (O. Le Bon Samaritain, l'estampe la plus grande et la plus ambitieuse de l'artiste, a été exposée pour la première fois au Salon de 1861 sous le titre Abd el-Kader secourant un chrétien. Il s'agit d'une référence à l'émir algérien qui, avec ses partisans, a sauvé des milliers de chrétiens lors des massacres de Damas en 1860, un acte que Bresdin met en parallèle avec la parabole du Nouveau Testament sur la bonté d'un étranger. Le traitement par Bresdin de ce sujet bien connu est très original, l'acte de miséricorde du bon Samaritain se perdant presque dans une forêt fantasmagorique, peuplée de plantes et de créatures étranges, exécutée dans des détails exquis.
L'estampe a été si bien accueillie lors de sa première parution en 1861 que l'artiste a publié une deuxième édition en 1867. Les impressions successives ont entraîné la détérioration de la pierre lithographique, ce qui a nécessité des modifications de la pierre pour couvrir les défauts, et finalement le transfert de l'image sur une nouvelle pierre en 1868, après quoi trois autres éditions ont été publiées en 1871, 1880 et 1882.
Cette belle épreuve est imprimée au verso d'une carte de la ville d'Angoulême émise en 1861 par l'atelier Lemercier. Elle fait partie des quelques impressions connues réalisées entre mars et mai 1861 et présente toute la gamme des détails complexes que l'on ne trouve que dans les tout premiers exemplaires.


`Le Bon Samaritan...is a large engraving on stone: an incongruous medley of palms, sorbs and oaks grown together, heedless of seasons and climates, peopled with monkeys and owls, covered with old stumps as misshapen as the roots of the mandrake; then a magical forest, cut in the centre near a glade through which a stream can be seen far away, behind a camel and the Samaritan group; then an elfin town appearing on the horizon of an exotic sky dotted with birds and covered with masses of fleecy clouds. It could be called the design of an uncertain, primitive Durer with an opium-steeped brain'.

This extract appears in the decadent novel Á rebours, 1884 by J. K. Huysman, as part of a narrative sequence describing the eclectic art collection of the central character, a reclusive aesthete, Jean des Esseintes. Huysman’s inclusion of Rodolphe Bresdin’s lithographic masterpiece, alongside works by Odilon Redon and Gustave Moreau, reflects the significance with which Bresdin was regarded by his contemporaries. Redon, who was taught the art of etching and lithography by Bresdin, reflected: `His power lay in imagination alone. He never conceived anything beforehand. He improvised with joy, completing with tenacity the entanglements of the barely perceptible vegetation of the forests he dreamt up. . . " (O. The artist’s largest and most ambitious print, Le Bon Samaritan was first exhibited in the Salon of 1861 under the title Abd el-Kader secourant un chrétien (Abd el-Kader aiding a Christian). This is a reference to the Algerian Emir, who, with his followers, saved thousands of Christians during the Damascus massacres in 1860, an act which Bresdin parallels with the New Testament parable of an outsider’s kindness. Bresdin’s treatment of this well-known subject is highly original, with the Good Samaritan’s act of mercy almost lost in a phantasmagorical forest, populated with strange plants and creatures, executed in exquisite detail.

The print was so well received when it was first issued in 1861 that the artist published a second edition in 1867. Successive printing resulted in the lithographic stone deteriorating, requiring alterations to the stone to cover defects, and eventually the transfer of the image to a new stone in 1868, after which three more editions were issued in 1871, 1880 and 1882.

This fine proof is printed on the reverse of a map of the city of Angoulême issued in 1861 by the Lemercier workshop. It is one of a few known impressions printed between March to May 1861 and displays the full range of intricate detail only present in the very earliest examples.
