Lot Essay

This painting was a gift from Botero to legendary dancer, Jacques d’Amboise (1934-2021). D’Amboise was a principal dancer under George Balanchine at the New York City Ballet for several decades before founding New York's National Dance Institute in 1976 to teach children the "magic and discipline of dance". This painting was created as a design for a backdrop of a performance of Carmen.
