Lot Essay

Trained as an architect, Resende has long probed the nature of embodied and inhabited space, often incorporating a sense of suspended motion and material tension into his sculpture. Playfully anthropomorphic, Passante conjures the dynamism of a moving figure out of a bisected sheet of metal, the torso supported by curving legs that splay outward, balancing precariously in space. This work is a version of the monumental public sculpture of the same name installed at Largo de Carioca, Rio de Janeiro.
