In the mid-1970s, Larraz painted several pictures of the famous British novelist and playright, William Somerset Maugham, including Reflections (1974) and Dinner at Negresco's (1974). These pictures, including the present work, reflect a certain dignity and "nobility of old age"; here Maugham appears "perfectly in charge of his vast intellect, aware of hte works around him, ready to make any incdent he observes the subject of a literary masterpiece."[1]
