Christie’s is honored to be offering property from the collection of Reyna Henaine. An art dealer and collector for more than three decades, Henaine dedicated her life and work to the promotion of Latin American art and artists. Featuring a diverse selection of works by some of Latin American’s most revered artists, the works in this collection reveal the special collaborative relationship between artist and dealer, and bear testament to Henaine’s passion for the arts.
Henaine first ventured into the art world through the sale of prints in the early '80’s. Soon after, she co-founded her first art gallery, Grupo Arte Contemporáneo, in Mexico City, working closely with renowned artists like Raul Anguiano (see lots 149-152 of sale 14244), Juan Soriano and Kazuya Sakai (see lot 180 of sale 14244) among others. In 1997, Henaine moved to New York, where she founded Henaine Fine Art, a physical and virtual gallery space showcasing the work of Latin and North American artists.
Among the many artists she worked with during her life, Henaine forged a unique partnership with renowned Mexican artist, Pedro Friedeberg. The two first met in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico nearly 20 years ago when Henaine acquired her first work by the artist (the Horse and Hand Table, featured in this sale). Friedeberg's skill, wit and originality and Henaine’s passion for promoting exceptional artists resulted in a nine-year partnership, whose legacy is partly featured in this sale (lots 1-13).
Offered this season across online and live auctions, Reyna Henaine’s esteemed collection represents a life’s work, and reveals Henaine’s keen interest in advancing the field of Latin American art, and her unwavering support of those artist with whom she collaborated.
