Fils de l’émailleur Charles Jean, Georges Jean travaille dans l’atelier familial des Essarts-le-Roi (Maison Jean), réputé pour son usage de l’émail translucide. Médaillé d’argent au Salon de 1881, il expérimente la coloration du cristal par oxydes métalliques et développe des décors naturalistes appliqués à des vases, coupes et bijoux. À l’Exposition universelle de 1889, il met au point un procédé capable de restituer les nuances de la chair avec un saisissant effet de trompe-l’œil. Alliant virtuosité technique et sens du réalisme, il s’impose comme l’une des figures originales du renouveau de l’émail français à la fin du XIXe siècle.
