Dès le XVIIIe siècle et sous l'influence stylistique de Paris, les gobelets de Magistrat qui jusque-là étaient sur fond plat à la mode allemande, adoptent la forme dite tulipe. Johann Stahl devient maître en 1718, probablement originaire de Saverne. On lui connaît d'autres gobelets de magistrat de ce modèle dont deux sont conservés dans les collections du Musée des Arts Décoratifs de Strasbourg dont un est également daté 1734 (Inv. XXXIX-5 et LVIII-5, voir H. Haug, L'Orfèvrerie de Strasbourg dans les Collections Publiques Françaises, Paris, 1978, No 66 et 67 et Musée de Strasbourg, Deux siècles d'orfèvrerie à Strasbourg, 2004, p.55, No 16). Marks clear to legible; engraving very clear. Light wear to original gilding. Very light scratching consistent with age and use. Small dent on foot-rim resembling a mark. Good gauge.
