The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.

Le tableau a fait l'objet d'un rentoilage. La toile est maintenue sous tension sur un châssis à clés et reste stable. Le processus de rentoilage a aplati les couches picturales supérieures par endroits.
Le tableau présente bien à la lumière naturelle, avec une profondeur de couleur bien préservée. Un réseau de craquelures recouvre la surface de la peinture. Celui-ci est particulièrement visible sur le visage du modèle. Ce réseau a été stabilisé à certains endroits, notamment dans l'arrière-plan à droite du modèle et sur son visage. La colle utilisée pour ce processus a viré. Dans le coin inférieur gauche, les craquelures sont beaucoup plus fines à certains endroits, ce qui entraîne de légères abrasions. On constate une griffe sur le gilet du modèle, en bas au centre. Le vernis a légèrement jauni et est encrassé. A la suite du processus de rentoilage, ces encrassements ont été insérés dans la trame de la toile et sont particulièrement visibles sur le visage et les cheveux du modèle.
L'examen sous lumière UV confirme ce qui précède.

The canvas has been subject to relining, it is held under tension on a keyed stretcher and remains stable. The relining process has flattened some of the upper impasted layers.
The painting presents well in natural light, with the depth of colour well preserved. There is a pattern of craquelure across the paint surface. This is most noticeable in the sitter's face. This has been stabilised in certain areas, such as in the background to the right of the sitter and in the sitter's face. The glue used to perform this process has discoloured. In the lower left corner the craquelure is much finer in areas, which results in areas of slight abrasion. There is a scratch across the sitter's waistcoat at lower centre. There is a slightly yellowed varnish that carries dirt; as a result of the relining process this has been pushed into the canvas weave and can be seen most clearly in the sitter's face and hair.
Examination under UV light confirms the above.
