Retourné en France le 31 juillet 1946 et restitué le 4 octobre 1946 à Marguerite Stern ;
Puis par descendance.

NIKLAS LAFRENSEN THE YOUNGER, CALLED NICOLAS LAVREINCE, THE CLOGS OR THE CHERRIES, BODY COLOUR, SIGNED

Swedish-born painter Niklas Lafrensen, better known as Nicolas Lavreince, was admitted to the Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm in 1773 before moving to Paris, where his style took a marked turn. Indeed, he was greatly inspired by the French rococo style and by the paintings of Boucher and Fragonard, and developed works in which the lightheartedness of gallant scenes shone through. Engraved by Couché in 1784 under the title Les Sabots ('the wooden clogs'), the present sheet is directly inspired by a scene from the comic opera of the same name by Jacques Cazotte (1719-1792) and Michel-Jean Sedaine (1719-1797), which premiered in Paris on 26 October 1768 and features a sung duet between a pair of lovers.
