Lot Essay

“The mask is an object of prestige; a manifestation of m’ma (spirit of the bush), an expression of opposites: mystery and danger, on the one hand, and salvation and support, on the other. The mask and its costume are also objects of technical learning (the manner the costumes are made, the materials used, the manner of wearing and dancing with them) and purely intellectual understanding (the religious and symbolic ideas; the values; the behavior; the songs). Historically the mask is also an expression of the socio-political and ritual linkages and interdependencies that developed between early hunting groups and
Lega-derived Bembe clans.”
