FOSS, Christopher "Chris" F. (b. 1946) Dune Guild Tug - concept art for Alejandro Jodorowsky's movie adaptation of Dune Circa 1975
Montage of line drawing with ink and acrylic paint on art board. Circa 500 x 630 mm, framed. Monogrammed lower right.
This original art, probably the most iconic piece related to the Dune project, is a prime example of Foss' mastery of several techniques, notably his use of airbrushes to paint these wonderful clouds, giving so much character to the planet's atmosphere, in the background. Foss' fondness of Turner ("his fogs, his clouds, his light, his way of applying paint") is on full display here. This painting can be surprising for the modern eye, accustomed to slick, grey spaceships. "My spaceships are like dragons -they breathe fire, they roar. They're not iPhones in space! I like to paint them with bold and striking colours. I guess this comes from the very special light in Guernesey, which gives to the environment this extraordinary breath of life".
