HERBERT, Frank (1920-1986), Michel DEMUTH (1939-2006), Alejandro JODOROWSKY (b. 1926), Jean GIRAUD (1938-2012) and others. Dune. [Paris, 1975].
A fascinating artefact : a working copy of the mythical Dune storyboard by Moebius, with around 230 crossed out panels which do not appear in the "promotion" storyboard shown to the American majors. This version would therefore be an intermediate state of the storyboard, between the original script and the "final" storyboard.
"I had my script. Now, I needed to find the warriors to do it. Every person who would work on this picture would be a spiritual warrior. The best I could find'. Jodorowsky's plan was to "shoot the movie on paper before I would do it on film" -he therefore needed a draughtsman who had "the genius and the velocity, who could be my camera and at the same time give a visual identity to the movie". He stumbled upon a bande dessinée album, from the Blueberry series, by a certain "Jean Giraud'. Mesmerized by the visual style, Jodorowsky started looking for this man. "By an extraordinary coincidence, he was with my publicity agent when I came to meet him", he remembers. "He introduced himself, and told me: 'I am Moebius. When I'm drawing science-fiction, I'm not Giraud, I'm Moebius". To call the task daunting would be an understatement -Jodorowsky needed around 3000 drawings to do a detailed storyboard. To convince an unsure Moebius, Jodorowksy told him : "if you don't come, I will ask [Philippe] Druillet to do it". Moebius was in. "He was not only an extraordinary artist, but he was also very fast. Superhuman! I would describe scenes, and without losing a second, he would draw them! It was incredible, he was faster than a computer!" Reproductions of his original drawings were made, and bound in several volumes to be distributed to the various artists working on the project. The riveted binding allows the book to be opened completely flat, pages to be annotated, and others to be removed or added at will. The present copy exhibits around 250 crossed out panels - suppressed shots, or entire sequences. These suppressed elements are not found in the "promotion" storyboard, distributed to the American producers. They would therefore be unpublished. The copy also contains some larger reproductions of some panels and sequences, which might be in actual size compared to the Moebius original art.
Oblong 4°(240 x 380 mm). 1 title page and 284 pages, for the most part reproduction of the Moebius storyboard, 1 page with the characters, and some spaceships designs by Chris Foss. The whole volume is printed on paper, only on the recto. 231 crossed out panels, which are not found in the "promotional" storyboard. Also included: - 3 larger panels, from sequence no. 46. 298 x 210 mm. - Montage of several leaves, making up the ending sequence. (495 x 610 mm, folding marks, laves gathered with adhesive tape).
Red riveted binding, with the title printed in white. Printing : as for the "promotional" storyboard, it's hard to evaluate the total print run, in the absence of actual sources. We know of 3 other similar copies.

Title page foxed (probably offsetting from the red binding), vertical folds on the first three leaves and on the final leaf. Apart from that in great inside condition, even more so when taking into account that it is a working document. On the lower right angle of upper board of the binding, one can read some black ink markings, which look like a date, partially erased.
