Lot Essay

The vertical markings on the forehead of this royal figure confirm him as a devotee of Vishnu. The bow and arrows indicate that this ruler has chosen to associate himself with Lord Rama, interpreted as an Avatar of Vishnu. A similar royal portrait in the image of Lord Rama also attributed to Bilaspur was sold at Sotheby's London, 24 May 2007, lot 6.
