The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The Herculaneum Gate at Pompeii:
The paper is in good condition overall. The pigments remain generally strong and fresh.
Executed on wove paper and fully laid down on a backing sheet. There is a circa 3.5 cm tear in the lower edge.
A view of the so-called Grotto of Virgil at Posillipo near Naples:
The paper is in overall good condition, apart from some stains. The pigments remain generally strong and fresh.
Executed on wove paper and not laid down. There are strips of tape on the verso and some pinpoint holes in the edges. There are some scratches in the edges and stains in the upper two quadrants of the sheet. There are marks in the edges from tape that has been taken off the drawing. There is an unobtrusive crease in the lower right quadrant of the sheet.
