Lot Essay

Nicole Kidman was acclaimed by the press for her choice of this dazzling, figure hugging dress when she attended the 85th Academy Awards on 24 February 2013. For this collection Scott said she was 'Dreaming of decadence. Looking to Gustav Klimt during the Golden Period, using Adele Bloch-Bauer acting as the muse.' The gold coil decorations were inspired by Klimt's mosaic from 'The Stoclet Frieze'.
This collection was the first time that Scott had shown in London and in a back-stage interview she said, 'I felt that it was the right time to show in London. London has the most international foot-traffic. Although we have a large presence in the USA we are currently expanding into Europe and Asia…You always have to deliver to your customer what they come to you for – your classic pieces as well as the new looks'. 132 guests attended a sit-down meal whilst watching the show, which was heavily influenced by Klimt. 23 carat gold leaf gilding was used on the accessories and also painted onto some of the exclusive dress fabrics (as seen on look 31, lot 10). Using gold leaf is an old technique and one Klimt was well known for. 'We wanted to see the paintings come to life so there are a few iconic paintings that interpreted into embroideries and tweeds and I’m excited to see that.'
