Lot Essay

Mariella Frostrup wore this ensemble to attend the Save the Children Secret Winter Gala in November, 2013. In the 'Gold Reimagined' video featuring this collection, this fabric can be seen being hand painted. The pattern was inspired by Klimt's 1902 portrait of Emily Floge wearing a blue and gold dress, with the colourway taken from Klimt's 1907 portrait 'Danae'. Scott said, ‘I design things for the luxury customer, who appreciates craftsmanship, quality, beautifully made clothes that you can wear over and over again…I am a very gold obsessed person. I wanted to play with elements of real gold – looking at how I could put real gold on shoes or how you could put gold onto fabric. Part of my inspiration was Klimt and his use of gold in his paintings – how he kept gilding this Adele Bloch-Bauer portrait because he was so in love with her, he never wanted it to end. Anything new in the textile world helps to set your brand apart. That’s really important to me – to have exclusive fabrics every season.’ (‘Gold Re-Imagined’ video made at the time of the ‘Allegory of Love’ collection.)

'L’Wren Scott was a style icon. Her greatest ‘creation’ was undoubtedly herself, an unforgettable, utterly unique, pale, elongated beauty. Sophisticated, always perfectly groomed, she was a conceptual artist and designer long before she finally got around to creating her intoxicatingly luxurious range of dresses and knitwear for women who wanted to explore their inner femme fatale. I remember arriving in Rome to stay at the Hotel De Russi for my 50th to find a black cocktail dress and lethal heels waiting for me in my hotel wardrobe. She was generous and thoughtful and utterly consumed by the intricate details of her creations. Never happier than when sourcing the finest lace makers the most gossamer like cashmere, the most luxurious fabrics for costumes that made their wearer feel almost as special as their creator.'
