Lot Essay

'The painting Duivenstil, also known as Les Baux Le Pigeonnier (cat.no. S.61-017). The latter title was only given after Wagemaker was more or less accidentally confronted with a steep cliff near Les Baux in South of France, ''weathered and sun-blackened , with rows of carved niches, in which pigeons nest.'' In the book of photographs ''Provence noir'' that Wagemaker had in his possession, there is a photograph of a similar rock. The resemblance is striking. It is quite possible that Wagemaker was inspired by this photograph. Several paintings by Jaap Wagemaker can therefore be juxtaposed with photographs of landscape observations and natural or artificial structures.' (S. den Heijer and M. van der Knaap, Aarde in verf: Jaap Wagemaker, schilder van het elementaire, 1906-1972, Zwolle 1995, p. 100).
