Lot Essay
Johannes Hermanus Barend Koekkoek was born as the third son of the marine painter Hermanus Koekkoek (1815-1882). He was taught by his father who instilled in him a lifelong passion for water. Maritime paintings would become his speciality, with a keen eye for the human element. He was frequently found in the little villages surrounding the Zuiderzee which was once a large inland sea in the Netherlands before it was diked in 1932. The lives of sailors and fishermen were chronicled in a refined and colourful style and as we can see in the present lot.

Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The painting has been subject to a relining (glue). The paint surface appears well preserved throughout and the craquelures network is now stable. The painting is covered in a thin, probably sprayed coat varnish. We can observe some scattered surface dirt over the varnish (especially upper centre in the clouds). We can observe some old restauration slightly discoloured to the sky, especially on the left part of the composition. Examination under UV light reveals the afore mentioned restoration on the left side (a thin vertical one at 4,5 cm. from the edge) as some others scattered in the sky, following the craquelures network. The boats and figures have not been recently restored and appear in a nice overall condition under UV light. In a gilt frame approx.. 123 x 165 x 11 cm.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report.
