Lot Essay
Together with his pregnant wife Adya, Otto van Rees travelled through the big cities of Italy for half a year, before they settled in a small coastal town called Anzio. This is where Van Rees painted the present lot and many other paintings with farmers and fishermen as a subject. Instead of only using the local population as models, like many artists did, Van Rees became close friends with the people from Anzio.

The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas, stretcher and attachments are in generally good condition. There are some craquelures in places. In natural light no obvious damages or retouchings can be detected, except for some small paint losses in places. When examined under ultraviolet light, there are multiple retouchings visible in places, most notably in the upper left corner and the lower left quadrant. The reverse of the painting has not been inspected.
