Lot Essay

We are grateful to Prof. Jochai Rosen for confirming the attribution upon inspection of photographs and for adding that Bredius (loc. cit.) probably mentions this specific portrait. Prof. Rosen further pointed out that the oval, ‘Portrait of a gentleman, half-length, in black’, which is signed and dated 1630, sold Christie’s, New York, 25 January 2012, lot 12 ($68,500), may well be the pendant to the present picture (see J. Rosen, Pieter Codde (1599-1678) : catalogue raisonné, Newcastle upon Tyne, 2020, p. 231, no. 6). The dimensions of both panels are almost identical and the male portrait is also signed with a monogram on its reverse, as Codde also did in another case of pendant portraits (J. Rosen, op. cit., nos. 14-15). The present oval’s date may read 1630, but if indeed dated 1631 it is still plausible both portraits are pendants.
