The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The painting is made on a single sheet of copper. On the reverse, there are some marks of tape and the copper is slightly locally oxidized. The panel is stable.
The varnish is a bit thick and we can observe some dust underneath. In natural light no obvious damages or restorations are visible, except for two small scratches (circa 1cm.) in the background left to sitter’s hair. We can observe some minor discoloured strengthening to his cloack in the lower left part and in the part below and above the gloves. There is also some discoloured strengthening to the right side of the date and annotation.
Examination under UV light confirms the afore mentioned strengthening, in addition to very few pinpoint retouchings in the forehead, minor strengthening on the shadowy part of the chin and several small scattered spots of retouching in the upper part of the background, mainly around the sitter’s head.
