Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The painting has been relined and lays on a modern stretcher. The relining has been a bit firm in some areas and correspondingly the paint surface has been marginally flattened in some places. The tension of the canvas is very good and the paint surface is perfectly stable. The painting remains very vibrant and figures are well preserved, especially those on the foreground. Examination under UV lighting reveals thin restorations in some craquelures networks (mainly in the sky) and few thin restorations in the white sail at the center of the composition. The signature lower right does not show any sign of reinforcement under UV lighting and is in a very well condition. The painting is covered in a coat of thin, recently cleaned varnish. Only the area surrounding the signature is covered in an old coat of varnish. In a wood frame, 17th century Dutch style (84,5 x 96,5 cm.)
