The prototype of this composition by Carel de Moor was once in the collection of the famous French art dealer Jean-Baptiste Pierre Le Brun (1748–1813) and offered at Sotheby’s, London, 16 December 1999, lot 131. In 1784 Antoine Romanet made an engraving after the picture for Le Brun’s Galerie des Peintres Flamands, Hollandais et Allemands. This lot follows the composition of the painting by De Moor rather than the mirrored direction of the engraving. We are grateful to Dr. Eddy Schavemaker and Pamela Fowler for their assistance cataloguing the present work.
