Lot Essay

The prototype of this composition by Carel de Moor was once in the collection of the famous French art dealer Jean-Baptiste Pierre Le Brun (1748–1813) and offered at Sotheby’s, London, 16 December 1999, lot 131. In 1784 Antoine Romanet made an engraving after the picture for Le Brun’s . This lot follows the composition of the painting by De Moor rather than the mirrored direction of the engraving.
