Lot Essay

The view of the Houtmarkt is, with variations in staffage, based on the print by Pieter Fouquet (Amsterdam 1729-1800) for the Nieuwe atlas, van de voornaamste gebouwen en gezigten der stad Amsterdam, met derzelver beknopte beschryvingen, published in 1783.

The view of the Amstel is based on a print of 1768 by Pieter Fouquet and Caspar Philips Jacobsz. (Amsterdam 1732-1789).

The larger panel with the view of the Munt tower largely follows a print of 1760 by Isaak Tirion (Utrecht 1705-1765 Amsterdam) for the Beschrijvinge van Amsterdam.
