CIRCLE OF JAN VAN DE CAPPELLE (AMSTERDAM C. 1624-1679)
A fishing boat moored on a beach in an estuary, other sailing vessels beyond and a town in the distance
This compositional type, in which a fisherman is seen wading on a beach towards sailing boats, is not only reminiscent of the beach scenes by Van de Cappelle, but also of the 'Calms' Willem van de Velde the Younger executed in the 1660s.
This picture is included in Ulrike Middendorf's monograph on Hendrik Dubbels as by the artist and as signed 'H. .ubbels'. This attribution and the signature were at the time based on information and photographs at the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie, The Hague. However, she rejected the attribution in 2006.

The thick oak panel is not cradled. It consists of two sheets joined horizontally. The panel is straight. In natural light, no obvious damages or retouching are visible. The original pigments and impasto appear beautifully preserved. A discoloured retouching of circa 7 cm long can be seen running horizontally from the left edge into the picture running through the two boats to the left. The varnish is dirty with surface dirt on top of it. Inspection with UV light reveals tiny retouching scattered throughout the sky and the afore mentioned retouching to the boats. Under an even green varnish, there are remain of the old varnish on the boat.
In a modern wood frame (55 x 65 cm.)
