ISAAC VAN OSTADE (HAARLEM 1621-1649)
A barn interior with a slaughtered pig, a woman preparing meat and two children beyond
The present picture belongs to a group of similar barn interiors with slaughtered animals on stacks, by both Isaac and his brother Adriaen van Ostade. The oldest example, by Isaac, dates from 1638. All these interiors are characterised by a monochrome colour scheme and a strong chiaroscuro, which reveals the influence of Rembrandt and his school in Amsterdam.
We are grateful to Dr. Bernard Schnackenburg for confirming the attribution to Isaac van Ostade on the basis of images. Schnackenburg further points out that both brothers influenced each other depicting this theme. In a similar painting signed and dated 1643 in the Städel Museum, Frankfurt, Adriaen adopted the leaves of the grapevine plant in the foreground from the present picture. An almost identical, unsigned, composition on panel with larger dimensions of 52 x 66 cm. by Isaac was offered with Mak van Waay, Amsterdam, 10 May 1971, lot 243.

The panel appears to consist of two sheets of wood, joined horizontally (the join is rather difficult to detect). The panel is straight and bevelled on all four sides. The varnish is somewhat glossy and has slightly yellowed.
In natural light no obvious damages nor retouchings are to be seen,. The original pigments and impasto appear beautifully preserved; the impressionistic wet-in wet-paint is beautifully visible, especially in the interior scene to the left and the pig has wonderful thick impasto. Above the female bending over the meat, a faintly darker spot is visible and it may be there was previously a man with a knife between his teeth, as can be seen in an image when unsuccessfully offered with Tajan, Etude, Paris, 12 December, 1995, lot 45.
Inspection under UV light reveals local strengthening to the architecture, mainly to the darker part on the right side of the composition Also minor strengthening to the female figure can be seen in addition to some scattered small spots in the foreground. Otherwise the varnish turns green and obscures further reading.
The frame measures 67 x 75 cm.
