Lot Essay

This charming, early tondo is accompanied by a letter from Dr. H-.U. Beck, dated 22 May 2000, in which Beck points out that he is not familiar with any other picture by the artist depicting a thunder storm akin. Beck states the composition reminds him of the drawings with thunder storms and downpour by Esaias van de Velde of 1628-29, for instance in the Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin of 1628 and in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge of 1629.

It has been suggested this tondo might be a pendant to Van Goyen’s Winter landscape with figures on a frozen river, diam. 12.2 cm., recently acquired by the State Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg (inv. ГЭ-10605).
