'Twee geleerde heren (...) hebben mij indertijd tevergeefs trachten duidelijk te maken dat ik een 'Riemann-vlak' heb afgebeeld. (...) mij ging het slechts om een gesloten, ringvormige uitdijing, die nergens begint en nergens eindigt. Welbewust koos ik reeksvormige objecten: een rij printen langs de wand en de huizenblokken van een stad. Zonder die reeksvormige elementen is de bedoeling nog moeilijker begrijpelijk te maken aan een willekeurige toeschouwer. Ook nu snapt hij er zelden wat van' – M.C. Escher
