Lot Essay

Marcus Aurelius Root learned daguerreotypy from fellow Philadelphian Robert Cornelius. Root ran multiple Daguerreian galleries over the course of his career, including a New York City studio that he ran collaboratively with his brother Samuel starting in 1849. Described by photography scholar and curator Beaumont Newhall as one of photography’s earliest historians, Root published The Camera and the Pencil in 1864. Today his work is found in the collections of The Library of Congress, Washington D. C.; The J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles; and the Eastman Museum, Rochester.
