Portrait believed to be of Lemuel Shaw, ca. 1850-51. “Shaw (1781-1861) served as chief justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Court from 1830 to 1860. Considered one of the sharpest legal minds of the nineteenth century, Shaw’s 2,000 decisions shaped many aspects of industrialized society but he may be best known as Herman Melville’s father-in-law.” p. 301, Young America.
