After beginning his daguerreotype practice and entrepreneurship in Boston, Robert H. Vance (1825-1876) traveled to South America top open several galleries in Chile. Thereafter, in the late 1850s, he moved to California to open additional galleries, one of which was run by photographer Carleton Watkins. While in California Vance also created extensive documentation the Gold Rush which he bought back to the east coast for exhibition, earning him high regards as a daguerreotypist. Ultimately, he would expand his galleries to Nevada and as far abroad as Hong Kong, though the last decade of his life was spent in New York City.
