Samuel Lyon Walker (1820-1874) worked as a daguerreotypist in Poughkeepsie, New York beginning in 1847. Walker learned the daguerreotype process from Samuel F.B. Morse, working as his assistant in New York City, and then went on to work on his own as a photographer for several years.

He retired from photography in 1854 only to pick up his interest again when the collodion processes and paper photography became mainstream. Beside the work offered here, the only known existing works by Walker are the 22 works held in the collection of the Eastman Museum in Rochester, New York.
