Samuel Root (1819-1889) learned the art of the daguerreotype from his older brother Marcus and together they operated a gallery at 363 Broadway in New York. Samuel Root became an accomplished artist, photographing celebrities and politicians. In 1853 he was awarded second prize in a contest held by Edward Anthony and judged by the likes of Samuel F. B. Morse and J. W. Draper. Today his work is found in the collections of The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; and The J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles.
