Lot Essay

This image is quite possibly the Canal Exchange business of the New Orleans, Louisiana area. According to research, an advertisement of the time notes that it was operated by a Mrs. Elizabeth Roder, “at the lake end of the New Shell Road. Visitors will find at all times a great variety of fresh Fish and Crabs, as well as every thing else which the market affords, and prepared in the best style; besides a large assortment of Wines and Liquors, which will be served up with punctuality and dispatch. There is also a tenpin Alley attached to the house, which will be open to visitors, day and night. As the Carrollton and Jefferson Railroad will be opened on the 14th of April, and thereby a pleasant and agreeable opportunity offered to passengers for the lake, the undersigned hopes to receive a share of the public patronage."—Mrs. Elizabeth Roder
