Josephine Cobb (1906-1986) occupied positions at the National Archives for thirty-six years as a cataloger, specialist in Civil War subjects, and later as Archivist-in-Charge of the Still Picture Branch. She was well known for her exhaustive research on Mathew Brady and Alexander Gardner, as well as on photographs of Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War. In 1952 she famously discovered the only known photograph of Lincoln at Gettysburg on the day of his Address, found upon extremely close inspection and study of a mislabeled glass plate negative. Over the course of decades, she was a devoted contributor to professional and academic associations and long a member of the distinguished Lincoln Group of the District of Columbia, where she served as President in 1970 and 1971.

Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
Please note that this work is being sold as received by Christie's from the consignor. Any visible wear is consistent with age and typical for objects of this type. The Maillets did not undertake any cleaning or restoration or interventions of any kind, and no conservation work has been carried out by Christie’s. The Maillets were selective in their acquisitions, avoiding pieces in significantly poor condition. As we are not professional conservators, we recommend that you consult with an external specialist or conservator should you wish to receive a more expert and detailed evaluation.
