FURTHER DETAILS
A MARBLE 'FIGURE OF THE VENUS DE' MEDICI', BY ANTONIO GARELLA, AFTER THE ANTIQUE

The rediscovery of antique sculptures precipitated a revival of classical themes. As is the case with the theme of the Venus Pudique, after the Venus de'Medici (Florence, Uffizi Gallery, inv. 224),notably copied by Antonio Garella (1863-1919).
Already very popular in Antiquity, this Roman copy Aphrodite Cnidia attributed to Praxiteles, made in the mid-fourth century BC, has often been reinterpreted after its rediscovery in the first half of the sixteenth century at the Baths of Trajan on the summit of the Oppius in Rome.
