CHARLES-ANDRÉ VAN LOO, CALLED CARLE VAN LOO, A MALE ACADEMY, RED CHALK, WATERMARK

Carle Van Loo was appointed assistant professor at the Académie in 1736 and professor in 1737. It was as part of his official teaching duties that he produced a large number of academies drawn in red chalk. Some were engraved to serve as models for his pupils. In 1737, Gabriel Huquier published a Livre de figures d'académies (Paris, BnF, Cabinet des Estampes et de la Photographie, inv. Fa 44). Following the success of this publication, Carle Van Loo produced a suite of six etched male figures himself in 1743. And from 1750 onwards, he had his academies engraved in sanguine manner, which ensured them wider distribution (E. Brugerolles, François Boucher et l'art rocaille dans les collections de l'École des beaux-arts, exhib. cat., Paris, Ecole nationale supérieure des beaux-arts, et al., 2003-2006, p. 238).The present study of a seated man is close to a composition in the opposite direction known from the engraving by Jean Charles François, taken by Gilles Demarteau from 1773 (Carle Vanloo. Premier peintre du roi, exhib. cat., Nice, musée Chéret, Clermont-Ferrand, musée Bargoin, Nancy, musée des Beaux-Arts, 1977, n° 592, ill).
