CORNELIS CORNELISZ. VAN HAARLEM (1562-1638), A MUSICIAN WITH A YOUNG AND AN OLD WOMAN, OIL ON PANEL

Executed circa 1636, this genre scene depicting a musician accompanied by a young and an old woman, belongs to a group of paintings that also date from the final phase of the artist's career and depict similar themes. These include Two Musicians, now in a private collection, France (see P. J. J. van Thiel, op. cit. supra, pl. 362) and A smoker and a drinker, dated 1636, formerly with Douwes in London (see P. J. J. van Thiel, ibid, pl. 358). This group demonstrates the evolution of Cornelis van Haarlem's (1562-1638) style towards the end of his life. This change can be understood as a reaction to the popular works of artists of the new generation such as Adriaen Brouwer (1605-1638) and Dirck Hals (1591-1656).

Le tableau est peint sur un panneau de bois composé d'une planche, non parqueté. Le panneau est biseauté le long de ses quatre bords. Le support est stable.
A l'oeil nu, on devine une importante campagne de restauration dans les tons verts et rouges (vêtements, tambour) ainsi que dans les fonds bruns, tout particulièrement dans la partie supérieure gauche. Des restaurations, liées au frottement du cadre, sont visibles le long du bord gauche.
A la lumière rasante, le tableau apparaît sous un vernis irrégulier qui pourrait bénéficier d'un nettoyage.
L'examen à la lumière UV révèle partiellement, en raison de l'opacité du vernis dans la partie inférieure centrale, la campagne de restauration susmentionnée. Les visages des deux femmes sont bien préservés malgré quelques retouches ponctuelles. Le tableau est sous un vernis ancien non homogène.
La matière reste stable.
Dans un cadre doré à marguerites (approx. 49 x 41,5 x 4,5 cm).

The painting is painted on a wooden panel made up of a single board, this is not cradled. The panel is bevelled along all four edges. The support is stable.
In natural light some quite extensive restoration can be seen in the in the green and red tones (clothes, drum) and in the brown backgrounds, particularly in the upper left-hand section. Retouching can be seen along the left edge, likely the result of frame abrasions.
In a raking light, irregularity can be seen in the varnish, and this might benefit from being redone.
Examination under UV light partially reveals the aforementioned restoration campaign, some is obscured due to the opacity of the varnish in the lower central part. The faces of the two women are well preserved despite some minor scattered retouching. The paint remains stable.
In a gilt frame with floral motif (approx. 49 x 41.5 x 4.5 cm).
