The painting is executed on canvas. This has been inserted into its frame and appears to be backed by what is possibly an MDF board; in its current state, the canvas cannot be removed from its frame.
In natural light, the painting presents well overall with the details of the composition the foliage and the figures all well preserved. a network of craquelure can be seen across the paint surface. In the lower left-hand corner the craquelure has started to tent, this area might benefit from stabilisation. In the same area are two minor losses with associated restoration, which suggests that a previous campaign of stabilisation has taken place. There is a pattern of horizontal craquelure that runs across the canvas approximately 30 cm from the upper edge which suggests that at some point the canvas might have been folded. The whole is under a fine, slightly dry varnish, which carries some dirt.
Examination under UV light shows that the painting has been selectively cleaned, an old, slightly cloudy varnish is present on the trees in the centre and at the bottom of the scene. There is evidence of some strengthening to the darker elements in the foliage in the trees to the left and the main tree to the right there is also some evidence of strengthening to the details in the bridge. As suggested above, in the bottom half of the composition it appears that the network of craquelure has been stabilised at some point in the past as there appears to be glue residue connected with the crack.
