A GILT-BRONZE BUST OF VITTORIO AMEDEO III OF SAVOY, KING OF SARDINIA, AFTER A MODEL ATTRIBUTED TO SIMON DUGUET, ITALIAN, SECOND HALF OF THE 18TH CENTURY

The authorship of the model of this small bust of Victor Amédée III, King of Sardinia, is known thanks to the other extant versions. There are two unattributed bronzes dated 1773 and 1774 respectively (inv. 1036/B and 0924/B) in the Palazzo Madama in Turin. Another bust, bearing the signature and date ‘Duguet f. 1774’, is in an English private collection.

Simon Duguet was a French artist based in Turin, where he taught at the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture. Like his master François Ladate, he became the ‘bronze sculptor’ of the King of Sardinia in 1787. Historiography attests to his works in bronze and his royal commissions, including a crown above the door of the Academy in Turin, which has now disappeared. The discovery of our bust, from the collections of H.R.H. Princess Maria Pia of Savoy, constitutes a considerable contribution to our knowledge of Duguet's links with the Crown of Sardinia and works which are still little known.
