ANTWERP SCHOOL 17th CENTURY, STUDIO OF JAN BRUEGHEL THE YOUNGER, THE VISION OF SAINT HUBERT, OIL ON CANVAS, BEARS A SIGNATURE AND DATE (LOWER LEFT)

With a few variations, this composition is based on one by Jan Brueghel the Elder (1568-1625) and Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) executed circa 1620, currently in the Prado in Madrid (inv. no. P001411). Our painting differs from the Spanish version in that red parrot in the tree and the dog standing behind the stag, neither of which feature in the Prado painting. The inclusion of the parrot helps to balance the composition, which is organised around a marked diagonal running from the top left to the bottom right of the painting.

Jan Brueghel the Younger (1601-1678) executed a work of the same subject now in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich (inv. no. 2178/670), which also dates from around 1620, before his voyage to Italy in 1622. In the Munich painting, the artist gives greater prominence to the landscape, relegating the figures to the lower left-hand corner.

Cette composition reprend avec quelques variantes celle de Jan Brueghel l’Ancien (1568-1625) et de Pierre Paul Rubens (1577-1640) exécutée vers 1620, actuellement conservée au Prado à Madrid (no. inv. P001411). Notre tableau diffère de la version espagnole quant au perroquet rouge assis sur une branche et au chien qui se dresse derrière le cerf, ces deux motifs ne figurant pas sur le tableau du Prado. L’inclusion du perroquet aide à équilibrer la composition qui s’organise ainsi autour d’une diagonale marquée traversant le tableau du coin supérieur gauche au coin inférieur droit.

Jan Brueghel le Jeune (1601-1678) traite ce même sujet dans un autre tableau conservé à l’Alte Pinakothek à Munich (no. inv. 2178/670), qui daterait également vers 1620, avant son voyage en Italie en 1622. Dans le tableau munichois, l’artiste accorde plus d’importance au paysage, reléguant les figures au coin inférieur gauche.
