FLEMISH SCHOOL 16th CENTURY, CIRCLE OF PIETER CLAEISSENS THE ELDER, A COUPLE OF DONORS IN PRAYER, OIL ON PANEL, SHAPED TO THE TOP, A PAIR, WITH THE DONORS' COATS OF ARMS

The inclusion of donors in an altarpiece is an artistic practice that illustrates the interaction between art, faith and social status in 16th-century Flemish society. This pair of panels is typical of this tradition. The donors, depicted in prayer, are accompanied by their patron saints: Saint Margaret for the wife, with a cross and dragon as attributes, and Saint John the Baptist, carrying the Lamb of God for the husband. This first, more symbolic layer of identification of the donors is coupled with a concern for realistic representation: they are depicted with great attention to detail - notably in the pin holding Marguerite's headdress, as well as her belt - and their individuality. By underlining their link with the divine, the donors hoped not only for recognition in the afterlife, but also for affirmation of their status on earth. The hauszeichen (or house signs) depicted in the green draperies of the two panels serve to display the couple's social status and illustrate their family's heritage and identity within society.
