This composition is based on one by Jan Brueghel the Younger (1601-1678) currently in the Szepmüveszeti Muzeum in Budapest (inv. no. 550), executed around 1620 before the young painter's Italian journey. We know of four versions of the painting by Brueghel the Younger himself, but this charming composition was so successful that other artists in the painter's circle also reproduced it many times.

Representations of the Earthly Paradise responded to the religious concerns of the time, emphasising the link between God and the natural world. The works of Jan Brueghel the Elder (1568-1625), which in turn significantly influenced those of his son, were profoundly influenced by the ideas of Cardinal Borromeo (1564-1631), a great friend of the Flemish painter, who advocated the representation of nature in art as a means of illustrating the divine order.

In 2011 Dr. Klaus Ertz examined this painting in person; his opinion was that it was autograph work by Jan Brueghel the Younger. A copy of his certificate can be made available on request.

Cette composition reprend celle de Jan Brueghel le Jeune (1601-1678) actuellement conservée au Szepmüveszeti Muzeum à Budapest (no. inv. 550), exécutée vers 1620 avant le voyage du jeune peintre en Italie. Nous connaissons quatre versions du tableau de la main de Brueghel le Jeune mais cette charmante composition a connu un tel succès que d’autres artistes dans l’entourage du peintre l’ont également reproduite à maintes reprises.

Les représentations du répondent aux préoccupations religieuses de l’époque, soulignant le lien entre Dieu et le monde naturel. Les œuvres de Jan Brueghel l’Ancien (1568-1625), qui ont sensiblement influencé à leur tour celles de son fils, furent profondément marquées par les idées du cardinal Borromée (1564-1631), grand ami du peintre flamand, qui prônait la représentation de la nature dans l'art comme moyen d'illustrer l'ordre divin.

En 2011, Dr. Klaus Ertz a examiné ce tableau en personne et a conclu qu'il s'agissait d'une œuvre autographe de Jan Brueghel le Jeune. Une copie du certificat est disponible sur demande.
