English
The painting is executed on a panel made up of at least two horizontally joined boards. The panel has a slight bevel to the left and right edges as seen from the reverse. The reverse of the panel has been painted with a brown wash. The panel remains stable.
In natural light, a hairline scratch along one of the panel joins is visible to the painted surface, measuring approximately 15 cm. This extends from the yellow irises at centre left into the steps leading up to the palace. The overall detail of the composition remains well preserved, especially in the animals and the flowers at lower right. There is a hairline scratch in the sky at centre right that extends diagonally for approximately 8 cm. There is a second diagonal hairline scratch below Circe's proper right-hand, measuring approximately 3 cm. There appears to have been some retouching to the brown and red tones of the architecture.
Examination under UV light confirms the aforementioned observations. There is some further retouching to Circe’s blue cloak, and in the area around Odysseus. There is some retouching to the arch beneath the stairway at centre-left, to the background at lower centre, and some scattered retouching along the panel grain in the sky at upper right. There are traces of old varnish on Circe's red skirt, and in the figure at the bottom of the staircase. The paint remains stable.
