The present portrait and the precedent lot (144), once hung in the Château de Solières (fig. 1), the former palace of the abbot of the Cistercian abbey of the same name, located high above the Meuse in Huy (Belgium).

We are grateful to Prof. Dr. Rudi Ekkart for confirming the attribution of this painting to the circle of Nicolaes Eliasz. Pickenoy (1588-1656) on the basis of an in person examination of the work. He suggests the portrait probably copies an original, which stylistically appears to date to the late 1620s. The present picture was very likely executed only a few years later, possibly by an artist in the studio of Pickenoy.

The model of the present portrait could be the mother of the man shown in the previous portrait (lot 144).

Ce portrait, ainsi que le précédent (lot 144), fut un temps accroché au château de Solières (fig. 1), ancien palais abbatial de l’abbaye cistercienne éponyme située sur les hauteurs de la Meuse à Huy (Belgique).

Nous remercions Prof. Dr. Rudi Ekkart d'avoir attribué ce portrait à un artiste de l'entourage de Nicolaes Eliasz. Pickenoy (1588-1656) sur la base d'un examen direct de l'œuvre. Il suggère que notre tableau reprendrait peut-être un original à situer dans les années 1620 et qu'il aurait probablement été executé quelques années plus tard, possiblement par un artiste dans l'atelier de Pickenoy.

Le modèle du présent portrait pourrait être la mère de l'homme figurant sur le portrait précédent (lot 144).
