The painting is executed on an oak panel, which is likely a fragment cut from a larger panel. To the reverse evidence can be seen along each edge of two nails having previously been inserted into the panel, likely holding it in place in a different framing format. There are wooden batons each measuring approximately 4 mm in depth that have been glued to each edge of the panel for further support. The panel remain stable.
The painting presents exceptionally well in natural light, with all the details of the skull well preserved. In a raking light, there is evidence of some lifting to the paint surface, notably to the left of the nasal cavity and to the lower centre. This might benefit from stabilisation.
Examination under UV light reveals some minor retouching at lower centre, and along a hairline crack of approximately 4 cm extending horizontally from the right-hand edge at the level of the eye-socket. The thick varnish precludes a more in-depth examination, and may hide further campaigns of restoration.

La peinture est exécutée sur un panneau de chêne. Il s'agit probablement d'un fragment découpé dans un panneau plus grand. Au revers, on peut voir sur chaque bord deux clous qui ont été insérés dans le panneau, probablement pour le maintenir en place dans un autre format d'encadrement. Des baguettes de bois mesurant chacune environ 4 mm de profondeur ont été collées le long de chaque bord du panneau afin de le soutenir davantage. Le panneau reste stable.
Le tableau présente exceptionnellement bien à la lumière naturelle, tous les détails du crâne étant bien préservés. À la lumière rasante, la surface de la peinture présente quelques signes de soulèvement, notamment à gauche de la cavité nasale et dans la partie inférieure centrale. Le tableau pourrait bénéficier d'une campagne de stabilisation.
L'examen sous lumière UV révèle quelques retouches mineures dans la partie inférieure centrale et le long d'une fissure d'environ 4 cm qui s'étend horizontalement depuis le bord droit au niveau de l'orbite. Le vernis épais empêche un examen plus approfondi et peut cacher d'autres campagnes de restauration.
