DUTCH SCHOOL 17th CENTURY, A SKULL ON A LEDGE, OIL ON PANEL, A FRAGMENT, INITIALLED (UPPER LEFT)

The marks along the right-hand edge, the horizontal direction of the wood grain and the cleavage in the lower part of the reverse of this small panel suggest that it is a fragment that once occupied the lower right-hand corner of a larger composition.
This lot is accompanied by two certificates from Dr. Max Jakob Friedländer (1867-1958), dated 2 May 1949 (?) and 11 May 1958, attributing the painting to Jan Sanders van Hemessen (1500-1566) on the basis of a photograph. Friedländer believed that the composition originated from a work by Quentin Matsys (1466-1530).
